19 inches high by 13 ½ inches long. American Black Walnut. This abstract piece is simply an intuitive composition. I started with a piece from the woodpile and used no maquette (clay model). It was simply a creative dialog between wood and chisel. The wormholes are authentic. I like the contrast between the flat areas and the rounded forms. The flat areas were made when the woodcutter sawed the tree, so I just smoothed them and went from there. This one is a pure abstraction and is simply designed to create interesting forms. Good art and composition are basically abstraction. If the abstract composition underlying the piece is not sound, then no matter how accurate the detail, the art will not "work."
